In recent years it has become a custom to celebrate mid spring with a meal at Marsh Barn - an ex-restaurant which is available for hire by groups prepared to do their own catering.

We are fortunate in having a very efficient group of ladies (and their partners) who not only prepare delicious home-made food but are also willing to provide a waitress/waiter service and wash-up afterwards. Members always greatly appreciate their efforts and the occasion at the end of April 2012 was no exception.

There was a lot of rain during April and the day we visited Petworth House was no different. The April showers were frequent and heavy but fortunately the house contains so much of interest that most of us were able to keep dry. This meant, unfortunately, that we weren't able to explore the extensive grounds but that does leave something new to see at our next visit.

by Robert Rhodes - NT Countryside Manager (West Dorset)

I am delighted to say that the Hardy Monument restoration project has now finished.

The Hardy Monument stands on an exposed location above the village of Portesham in Dorset. It was built in 1844 in memory of Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, Flag Captain of HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. Amongst other things, Hardy became famous as it was in his arms that Nelson died, saying the immortal words “Kiss me Hardy“. The Nation…
