A Cathedral and an Abbey visit on the same day - this could have been too much of a good thing, but it proved to be both a fascinating and educational day.
Our first stop was Winchester Cathedral where we were greeted by volunteer guides who gave us fascinating insights to the history and significance of the various parts of the cathedral we were allowed to visit.
There was an opportunity to have lunch before we rejoined the coach for a trip around the circumference of a hill, eventually arriving at Mottisfont Abbey and gardens. This 12th Century Augustine Priory is now a handsome house with a drawing room decorated by Rex Whistler. Unfortunately photography is not allowed in most of the rooms.
We were extremely fortunate that our visit coincided with a display of original artwork by Beatrix Potter which, because of its fragility is only on display once every 10 years. Again, photographs weren't allowed except in the garden and dining room.
